Milestone sod turn for the Victorian Heart Hospital project

23 October 2018

The Victorian Heart Hospital is coming to life, with the first sod turned and further designs revealed on the $543 million project.

Set to open its doors to patients in 2022, Australia’s first dedicated heart hospital will be a state-of-the art cardiac facility, located on Monash University’s Clayton campus.

Through project partners Monash Health and Monash University, the hospital will integrate cardiac research, education and clinical services, to ensure Victorians have access to world-class cardiac care.

When fully operational, the Victorian Heart Hospital will have capacity for:

  • 195 beds
  • 1,500 cardiac surgeries
  • 13,500 cardiac laboratory procedures
  • 28,300 cardiac emergency presentations, and
  • 108,000 consultations annually.

The new hospital’s design shows how we are bringing together clinicians and researchers to create continuous innovation.

A light-filled central courtyard  will be the hospital’s ‘green heart’ – connecting patients and staff to nature to create a calm, healing environment.  Its people-centric design takes into account the experience of everyone in the hospital environment: patients, visitors, clinicians, researchers and staff.

During construction, the project will create more than 1700 jobs, adding significant benefits to Victoria’s economy.
