North Melbourne, Northcote and Preston public housing redevelopment
The Victorian Government is committed to providing better homes and stronger communities for all Victorians.
That’s why we are transforming these ageing public housing estates into vibrant well-connected neighbourhoods with homes that are comfortable, modern and energy efficient.
The Victorian Government is joining together with development partners – MAB Corporation and community housing provider, HousingFirst – to completely rebuild the North Melbourne, Northcote and Preston estates, and deliver more social housing to better meet demand.
The homes that were built in the 1950s no longer meet the needs of today’s Victorians and so we are working to deliver integrated communities with social, affordable and private housing options to meet those needs.
These sites are close to transport, education facilities, employment, support services and shopping precincts.
The new homes constructed will be modern and accessible, safe, secure and energy efficient with 5-star Green Star and 7-star NatTHERS rating.
In 2017 the Victorian Auditor General recommended that ageing public housing was in urgent need of redevelopment. The new homes will be built to meet the needs of tenants today and into the future.
The redevelopment is funded by the Victorian Government and from the proceeds of the sale of some private housing being built on each site, which includes a proportion of private housing allocated for First Home Buyers.
Overall, there will be a 50 per cent increase in social housing across the estates.
